Mapping my Scandinavian Ancestry

December 13, 2017

This image I created from a map I made and a ship I painted holds much meaning for me. My family has our roots in Scandinavia (especially Denmark and Norway), and generations of us have depended on travel to and from that region. Ever since Viking times, the ship has been a powerful symbol in Scandinavian culture. History, progress, and survival depended on sailing. In my own generation, we rely on commercial planes to fly us where we need to go. A 'flying ship' is sailing over this map.

Another piece of artwork I made depicted an origami ship traveling through a desert environment. I suppose a ship made out of paper is more likely to survive in arid surroundings. But I think the ship in the painting is sailing. Going slowly is still progress.
